HOWTO: Get Facebook shares of your event website looking good

ajay

When your event website is shared on Facebook you might think the image and text that is shared alongside it is up to chance, but it is not. Follow these steps to pick the image and text that will get shared and show off your event in its best light.

1. Facebook provide a tool to preview what a share of your website looks like - Open Graph Object Debugger. Have a look and see if this is how you want your website represented on Facebook.

2. If you want to change what is included when shared on Facebook you will need to place some tags on your website. These get placed in the <head> section of the html on your website. Facebook have a best practises guide to including these tags on your website - Sharing best practices

The title, description and image tags are the ones you want to get right.

<meta property="og:image" content="http://www.eventwebsite.com/your_lovely_image.jpg" />
<meta property="og:title" content="Your event title here" />
<meta property="og:description" content="A nice short easy to read description of your event" />
<meta property="og:url" content="http://www.eventwebsite.com" />

We would suggest you point to an image that is at least 1200 x 630 pixels.

3. Once you have added the tags go back to the Facebook link provided in step 1 and click on the "Get scrape information" button so Facebook updates what it stores about your website.

Please get in touch with any questions or if you want to learn how you can get more or your event registrants sharing details of your event.

Great content every Thursday!
